BruinTech Speed Dating is an event aimed at enhancing IT literacy and innovation among UCLA Staff. The event is structured as a form of “speed dating for technology” format. As part of Data Privacy Month, volunteer IT professionals will run a series of 10-minute demonstration sessions on a number of online privacy enhancing tools and techniques, including:

• Social media settings
• Ad blockers
• Browser settings
• Setting up a VPN at UCLA
• Laptop theft recovery
• Smartphone settings
• UCLA cloud service offerings

This event is hosted by the Office of the UCLA Chief Privacy Officer, in partnership with OIT Community Partnership Programs and BruinTech.

Data analytics and the use of Big Data have extraordinary promise in enhancing our lives and the world around us. At the same time, there are significant legal and ethical concerns surrounding the use of Big Data in decision making. DataLex at UC Santa Cruz brought together data scientists, policymakers, legal scholars, and privacy advocates to consider some of these pressing issues.

The UCLA Board on Privacy and Data Protection is looking for an undergraduate student interested in privacy issues to serve a one-year term (AY 2015-16). The Board is charged with articulating institutional privacy and data protection principles and positions that reflect the campus’s values and cultural expectations in order to set strategic direction and guide operational policy development and management decision-making. The Board serves as the institution’s chief endorsement body on such positions.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal statute that protects student information. It is important to have an understanding of FERPA compliance if your role at the University involves working with any student data.

In January, 2007, modifications to federal law addressed production of electronically stored information and records in lawsuits filed in federal court.  In response to these modifications, UCLA implemented guidelines to ensure compliance with these new laws as they relate to Electronically Stored Information, or ESI.  ESI is not only email, it is also data on computers, lap tops, portable devices such as PDAs, and other electronically stored information.  UCLA is engaged in an on-going effort to train members of the campus community on their responsibilities to ensure preservation of ESI when litigation is reasonably anticipated.
