In January, 2007, modifications to federal law addressed production of electronically stored information and records in lawsuits filed in federal court. In response to these modifications, UCLA implemented guidelines to ensure compliance with these new laws as they relate to Electronically Stored Information, or ESI. ESI is not only email, it is also data on computers, lap tops, portable devices such as PDAs, and other electronically stored information. UCLA is engaged in an on-going effort to train members of the campus community on their responsibilities to ensure preservation of ESI when litigation is reasonably anticipated.
For more information or training materials on the practices for preservation of electronically stored information, please refer to the e-Discovery training materials posted at the Office of the Campus Counsel’s web site.
